PROJECT OUTLINE

Industrial Sound Design is a course where the students from Advanced Product Design (APD) collaborates with the Interaction Design students (IXD) at Umeå Institute of Design. The focus on the course is to explore and design sounds a form together.

My Team wanted to look into the problem that screen time before going to bed affects your sleep. Electronics emit light keep you awake and contribute to sleep problems. Exposure to screen light before bed also leads to less REM sleep or dreams sleep, which can increase your risk of a range of health problems.

CHALLENGE

Our research showed that a lot of people are using their phones before going to sleep. We discovered that a lot of people would like to spend more time on reading a book before going to bed, but the phone is keeping them away from it.

Our challenge was to focus on self motivation instead of forcing people to put their phone away. Instead, we wanted to find a way of using the phone as a trigger to promote reading.

RESULT

Yoro is a combination of an induction charging device and a reading light. Yoro’s presence will nudge the user to read a book instead of looking at the phone before going to sleep.

The reading lamp is activated when the user is “putting their phone to bed”. This, to use the phone as a trigger to promote the energy for the reading light.
